Expressive and receptive language deficits can arise following a stroke. We refer to these difficulties as aphasia. Aphasia can be very frustrating for the individual and their family, but we are here to help!

Common difficulties for people with aphasia can include:

  • Trouble thinking of the words you want to say.
  • Difficulty forming or understanding ideas.
  • Saying made-up words instead of real words by mistake.
  • Problems reading, writing, or completing math calculations like balancing a checkbook.
  • Understanding how and when to take your medications.
  • Challenges understanding what other people are saying to you.

If you or a loved one are struggling to communicate, speech therapy for adults can help you get your voice back. We are passionate about helping you regain your quality of life.

Cognitive Therapy for Adults

Cognition or thinking skills are important for nearly every aspect of everyday functioning. Cognitive deficits can be frustrating and overwhelming. Being unable to do the things you used to can leave you feeling defeated. Our speech-language pathologists are here to help!

Cognitive impairments are most commonly because of traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, dementia, or stroke. Your speech therapist can develop an individualized treatment plan to target any area of cognition. Your treatment might include:

  • Developing strategies and aides for memory.
  • Improving organization, including the ability to follow directions, manage multiple tasks, and engage in financial or medication management.
  • Coping strategies for navigating emotions related to the cognitive impairment or social difficulties.
  • Improving conversational skills including topic maintenance and social skills affected by the cognitive impairment.
  •  Problem-solving.
  • Comprehending complex or written information.

If you struggle with cognitive functioning, our compassionate therapists are ready to help you. We would love to schedule a free consultation with you to discuss your situation and our services.

Stuttering

Stuttering is more common than many people realize. It is something that can often persist into adulthood. It can impact relationships, careers, and your self-confidence.

Working with a speech-language pathologist can help you learn strategies to improve speech fluency, as well as your attitudes and beliefs about stuttering.

Common characteristics of stuttering can include:

  • Getting “stuck” on certain sounds.
  • Repeating sounds, syllables, or one-syllable words.
  • Showing physical changes such as eye blinking or facial grimacing when speaking or saying certain sounds.
  • Having negative feelings or attitudes about their speech

Addressing stuttering through teletherapy makes receiving services much easier. You can practice strategies from the comfort of your own home. We are happy to schedule a free consultation to speak with you about therapy. If email is easier for you, we are happy to answer your questions that way too!
